Why do people have cheek fillers – how our face changes with time
Our face changes as we age, and we lose volume in the bony structure of our face, especially our cheeks and this is compounded by the simultaneous loss of collagen and the reduction of hyaluronic acid which occurs with the ageing process. This can lead to the face looking hollow with some sagging of the skin and more visible lines appearing. Recent weight-loss can also be a cause of loss of volume and loss of definition around the cheek area.
What are cheek fillers?
Cheek fillers are used to restore lost volume and contour back to the cheek area. This helps to redefine the cheek bones by acting as a scaffold to lift up the skin and at the same time to smooth out lines. Hyaluronic acid dermal fillers are injected onto the cheekbones itself to increase/replace the volume around your cheekbone and make you look how you used to look 5-10 years ago.
What are the benefits of cheek fillers?
Cheek fillers can make a big impact on a person’s appearance for a non-invasive and painless procedure. Other alternatives, such as cheek implants or facelifts, are much more invasive and drastic options as well as being far more costly.
The benefits of cheek fillers include:
- Very low risk procedure when done by a qualified and experienced Aesthetician. At the Hedox Clinic, our Doctor has Level 7 in Aesthetic Medicine
- Relatively pain-free procedure – local anaesthetic within the hyaluronic acid as standard
- No recovery time required
- Easy to manage the level of filler used (1ml-2.5ml is used in cheek fillers)
- Non-permanent – if you change your mind or want a different approach the procedure is easily reversible
- When administered properly, they provide a natural and long-lasting enhancement to increase the volume of the cheek for 18 months
How do cheek fillers work?
Cheek fillers, Hyaluronic acid dermal fillers are injected into the deep layers of the face to replace lost volume and provide a natural enhancement.
At Hedox Clinic, Dr Humble uses the multi award-winning dermal fillers Teosyal Ultra Deep and Teosyal RHA4 (from Teoxane Laboratories). Teosyal RHA is the first HA filler that is designed to respect and adapt to the facial anatomy and dynamic function by using a product designed to mimic the body’s own natural make-up. Teoxane Laboratories in Switzerland use new industry-leading scientific expertise and innovation to produce high performance medical products with ground-breaking cross-linking technology to create a natural yet long-lasting enhancement. It is the patented process of cross-linking at Teoxane which maximises the structural integrity of the Hyaluronic Acid filler itself, thus preventing it from getting broken down by the natural enzymes present within the body for as long as possible.
How much cheek filler should I have?
You will have a consultation with our Aesthetic Doctor prior to your injectables treatment and he will discuss your concerns, requirements and assess your skin to decide on the best treatment for you. However, as a guide, to replace loss of volume and to achieve natural definition with contouring, 1-2.4ml of HA filler is often required.

Results to expect from cheek fillers…
Whilst cheek fillers are a very effective aesthetic procedure and deliver a fuller, more defined cheekbone area and fill facial hollows that are caused by ageing or weight loss, it is important to establish realistic expectations.
Discuss your concerns and expectations with your doctor and make sure you are both in agreement of realistic outcomes prior to having the procedure to avoid any disappointment. Cheek fillers are best achieved as a gradual process and it is advisable to be more conservative and build up, rather than to have too much and regret it afterwards.
After the treatment, there may be a small amount of bruising or swelling, but this is short lived and should only last for a few days. The cheek enhancement can be seen immediately but will improve further over the next week or so as any swelling resolves and the dermal filler settles fully into place. The results vary from client to client, but generally cheek fillers should last at least 18 months due to the high density and cross-linking of the product used.
