Botox, or Botulinum Toxin type A, is used for several purposes: relaxing facial muscles to treat and prevent wrinkles and fine lines, reducing excessive sweating and treating painful muscle spasms. We offer all these treatments and more, including the new indications for Botox, such as treatments for migraine, jawline slimming, teeth grinding, pain with high heels, calf muscle slimming, gummy smile and the lip flip.
A combination of factors can cause facial lines and wrinkles. It’s not just about the cellular changes that may occur, the reduction of collagen, or damage caused by free radicals from the sun and the environment. Repeated muscle contractions from frowning, squinting, or raising eyebrows cause the skin to furrow and fold, gradually forming lines and wrinkles.
Botox treatments differ to dermal fillers, which typically contain hyaluronic acid gel, which ‘fills’ a space. Both can provide anti wrinkle treatments to different areas of the face. For example, Botox is great for the upper face, while dermal fillers are great for the smile lines. Baby Botox is a popular treatment with some younger people where lower doses of Botox are used in order to soften the lines while still preserving full facial expressions.
Botox works beneath the surface and temporarily reduces the underlying muscle activity that causes moderate to severe frown lines, crow’s feet, bunny lines, smokers lines, and forehead lines and wrinkles in adults – to help them look visibly smoother.
Cosmetic Botox is used for the temporary smoothing of “frown lines”, which are the lines between your eyebrows that can make you look tired, unhappy or angry. It is FDA-approved for this use specifically. However, it is often used off-label for horizontal forehead lines, crow’s feet, marionette lines at the corners of the mouth and smokers lines around the lips. If you would like to learn more about what you can expect from your first Botox treatment check out our new blog.
A popular cosmetic treatment, Botox can also be used as a Botox brow lift, which provides a non surgical eyebrow lift, and in conjunction with hyaluronic acid such as cosmetic lip fillers. Botox treatments can benefit both female and male patients, whether its for cosmetic treatments to relax certain facial muscles to provide effective anti wrinkle treatments or non-cosmetic indications.
While the majority of people find regular Botox treatments relatively painless, some individuals do experience brief discomfort, similar to a bee sting. It all depends on your individual pain threshold but numbing cream can be applied prior to the treatment to ease any discomfort. Immediately after the treatment, you may notice some redness or bumps around the injection point that is simply mild irritation from the Botulinum Toxin contained within the Botox injection, but these will settle within minutes. The procedure will not stop you from going about your normal activities, although you should avoid vigorous exercise, sauna/steam rooms, alcohol, spicy foods and air travel for 24 hours afterwards.
The line between Botox vs dermal fillers can sometimes seem a bit blurred, so if you’re just starting to look into injectables, it might feel confusing working out which is best for you. If you still want to know more why not check out our blog here.
Don’t confuse Botox Cosmetic with injectable fillers. Dermal fillers work differently, plumping up tissues so that lines and wrinkles diminish or disappear (Teoxane, Restylane and Juvederm are examples). Dr Humble or Dr Basi will help you to decide which product(s) will solve your particular appearance issues, though as a general rule, Botox is used mostly in the upper portion of the face, targeting problems such as frown lines, forehead lines and wrinkles, and fillers are used mostly in other areas.
Botulinum toxin is predominantly used as a treatment to reduce the appearance of facial wrinkles and fine lines.
Beyond aesthetic applications, Botox is used to treat a variety of medical conditions, including eye squints, migraine, excessive sweating, and bladder dysfunctions. Botulinum toxin is currently used to treat over 20 different medical conditions, with more applications under investigation.
Botulinum toxin is currently approved for the following therapeutic applications:
Botox can also be used for a number of other reasons including feet and migraines.
Botox for feet – to reduce pain while wearing high heels, Botox is injected directly into the foot. The treatment is combined with hyaluronic acid filler in order to achieve the Hedox Stiletto Lift effect.
Botox for migraines – One method of treating chronic migraines is with botulinum toxin therapies, which have been shown to be successful in clinical trials. The use of additional drugs and a change in lifestyle may be advised.
Although the majority of patients experience no side effects, some individuals may find that they experience some, such as slight swelling or minor bruising. Our Botox injections in London are generally well tolerated and there are few side effects. In some very rare cases, individuals may have a genetic predisposition that results in a mild, transient unusual response to the drug. Around 1% of people receiving injections of botulinum toxin type A develop antibodies to the toxin that make subsequent treatments ineffective.
Along with the intended effects, botox injections may rarely cause some unwanted effects including:

Botox, more specifically Botulinum toxin, is a medical and cosmetic agent administered by qualified practitioners as a purified neurotoxin that temporarily paralyses muscles in the face. Over time the relaxed muscles allow the overlying lines or wrinkles to smoothen and become less noticeable. The term ‘Botox’ has stuck in the public’s consciousness as this was the original branded name of the first commercially used injectable toxin. In the cosmetic industry, the muscles responsible for creating classic dynamic frown lines, crow’s feet, bunny lines and forehead wrinkles are the target. Botulinum toxin is produced in specialised manufacturing laboratories to very high standards and has an excellent safety record when used by experienced and qualified medical professionals. At Hedox Clinic we always recommend going to a reputable medical clinic when having any injectable treatment such as Botulinum toxin or dermal filler injections.
Botox injections have a wide variety of uses, most notably as an antidote to facial wrinkles. Listed below are other conditions also helped:
At Hedox Clinic, we specialise in treating facial wrinkles and migraines.
Botox injections for anti-wrinkle treatment takes very little time. Your practitioner should assess you fully prior to injecting the key areas of need. There is no anaesthesia required and minimal downtime, though you may experience slight swelling and redness for a brief time. Undertaken in a clinical and hygienic setting, the small needles used to administer Botox target forehead lines, crow’s feet, frown lines, 11’s lines and bunny lines amongst many with results seen within a short time frame (1-2 weeks). The treatment is not considered painful with many clients comparing it to a vaccination needle prick or pinch.
There are many reasons to consider having Botox injections. Most commonly this is to look younger and have a refreshed look or it can be linked with pressures from (social) media, and society in general to age gracefully betwixt with the expectation to maintain a youthful glow. Botox is a safe and effective treatment but it is not necessarily the answer for everyone. Pregnancy and breastfeeding currently have no reports of any contraindications for use but no ethical study can ever be made to attest to this. Botox treatment is suitable for all genders and is increasingly popular with men looking to soften lines and wrinkles without any noticeable evidence of treatment.
Immune disorders, psychological reasons, skin sensitivity, alcoholism, bleeding disorders and poorly controlled diabetes patients are recommended to avoid botulinum toxin treatment. However, practitioners can discuss individual cases with the client’s general practitioner to discuss suitability. Finally, clients with unrealistic expectations e.g. those with body dysmorphic disorder (BDD) are unlikely to be satisfied with any outcome achieved and as such are not considered suitable candidates for Botox treatment.
Please see Chapter 7 of Dr Humble’s book for further information – Should I get Botox?
It is recommended to avoid both exercise and consuming alcohol for 24 hours post-treatment. This is primarily to improve and optimise your healing capacity and decrease the likelihood of bruising and swelling to the injection sites. Alcohol is a vasodilator and increases blood flow to the face. With regards to consuming alcohol aboard aircraft, the effects can be more dramatic and have a more sustained and impactful recovery. Although very uncommon, botulinum toxin can have a dizzying effect and may cause drowsiness which is best avoided with alcohol use.
Similarly, exercise should be avoided for a minimum of 3 hours post-treatment but ideally for 24 hours due to the increased blood flow to the area. Increased cardiovascular output can have a negative outcome for your treatment area, causing your botulinum toxin to diffuse away from the treatment site and may have other undesired outcomes e.g. temporary paralysing of adjacent facial muscles.
Your consultant with discuss and provide you with aftercare information regarding this matter.
It really is the million-dollar question! Dr Humble has helpfully published a clear and concise book on the matter available here. He discusses the history of botulinum toxin, the risks and benefits and covers the journey from consideration to consultation to completion. Our helpful team are always on hand to answer any questions you may have. Book in for your consultation with Dr Humble to discuss your individual needs. You will see results quickly and once the treatment wears off after 3-4 months you will return to your pre-treatment condition. If you would like to get rid of unsightly lines on the forehead, brow or around the eyes then this could be a great and very safe option for you.
The question of cost comes down to the number of areas to be treated e.g., 1. Brow. 2. Forehead lines. 3. Crow’s feet. 4. Bunny lines, and the skill and expertise of your practitioner. Number of areas can be discussed over the phone with our helpful team and during consultation.

Due to the nature of the treatment on the tiny nerve endings in the targeted muscles the effects (particularly in the first instance) can take 1-2 weeks to appear. However, if injected at regular intervals the weakening of the muscles means the results appear more quickly and last longer. There may be some residual redness or very minor bruising which will dissipate quickly.
As with all aesthetic treatments, this is based on the individual but, in general terms, Botox can last 3-4 months in the first instance but with regular use it is very common to last up to six months.
