What is Botox?
Botox is used for three main purposes: muscle spasm control, severe underarm sweating and cosmetic improvement. We always concentrate on the third use, achieved with the product called Botox Cosmetic, which contains botulinum toxin type A (the active ingredient), human albumin (a protein found in human blood plasma) and sodium chloride.
A combination of factors can cause facial lines. It’s not just about the cellular changes that may occur, or reduction of collagen, or damage caused by free radicals from the sun and the environment.
Repeated muscle contractions from frowning, squinting, or raising eyebrows cause skin to furrow and fold, gradually resulting in the formation of facial lines. Botox works beneath the surface and temporarily reduces the underlying muscle activity that causes moderate to severe frown lines, crow’s feet and forehead lines in adults – to help them look visibly smoother.
Botox Cosmetic is used for the temporary smoothing of “frown lines”, which are the lines between your eyebrows that can make you look tired, unhappy or angry. It is FDA-approved for this use and in this area only. However, it is often used off-label for horizontal forehead lines, crow’s feet, marionette lines at the corners of the mouth and smoker’s lines around the lips.

Is Botox a Painful Procedure?
While the majority of people find the procedure relatively painless, some individuals do experience discomfort. It all depends on your individual pain threshold but numbing cream can be applied prior to the treatment to ease any discomfort. Immediately after the treatment, you may notice some redness or bumps around the injection point but these will settle within minutes. The procedure will not stop you from going about your normal activities, although you should avoid vigorous exercise, sauna/steam rooms, alcohol, spicy foods and air travel for 24 hours afterwards.
Botox and Filler
The line between Botox vs fillers can sometimes seem a bit blurred, so if you’re just starting to look into injectables, it might feel confusing working out which is best for you.
Don’t confuse Botox Cosmetic with injectable fillers. Dermal fillers work differently, plumping up tissues so that lines and wrinkles diminish or disappear (Restylane, Radiesse and Juvederm are examples). Dr Humble will help you to decide which product(s) will solve your particular appearance issues, though as a general rule, Botox is used mostly in the upper portion of the face, and fillers are used mostly in other areas.
What Can Botox be Used for?
Botulinum toxin is predominantly used as a treatment to reduce the appearance of facial wrinkles and fine lines.
Beyond aesthetic applications, Botox is used to treat a variety of medical conditions, including eye squint, migraine, excessive sweating, and bladder dysfunctions. Botulinum toxin is currently used to treat over 20 different medical conditions, with more applications under investigation.
Botulinum toxin is currently approved for the following therapeutic applications:
- Blepharospasm (spasm of the eyelids)
- Idiopathic rotational cervical dystonia (severe neck and shoulder muscle spasms)
- Chronic migraine
- Severe primary axillary hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating)
- Strabismus (crossed eyes)
- Post-stroke upper limb spasticity
- Detrusor (bladder wall muscle) overactivity – causing urinary incontinence
- Overactive bladder
- Hemifacial spasm
- Glabellar lines (frown lines between the eyebrows)
- Canthal lines (crow’s feet)
What are the Side Effects of Botox?
Although the majority of patients experience no side effects, some individuals may find that they experience some. Our Botox injections in London are generally well tolerated and there are few side effects. In some very rare cases, individuals may have a genetic predisposition that results in a mild, transient unusual response to the drug. Around 1% of people receiving injections of botulinum toxin type A develop antibodies to the toxin that make subsequent treatments ineffective.
Along with the intended effects, botox injections may rarely cause some unwanted effects including:
- Mild pain, local oedema (fluid buildup) and/or erythema (reddening of the skin) at the injection site
- Malaise – feeling generally unwell
- Mild nausea
- Temporary unwanted weakness/paralysis of nearby muscles
- Temporary upper lid or brow ptosis (drooping)
- Weakness of the lower eyelid or lateral rectus (a muscle controlling eye movement)
- Dysphagia – trouble swallowing
- Neck weakness
- Flu-like illness
- Brachial plexopathy – a condition affecting the nerves either side of the neck and chest
- Gallbladder dysfunction
- Diplopia (double vision)
- Blurred vision
- Dry mouth
