What Do You Need to Know About Botox
To maintain healthy looking skin what we need is an effective topical skincare regime, ideally including cleansing/toning, exfoliants, anti-oxidants, hydration and of course most importantly, a high quality broad spectrum SPF, however as we age, our skin can lose elasticity and we can develop fine lines and wrinkles. Even with a thorough and extensive skincare routine, you can still lose volume in your face and develop fine lines and creases that can make you look older than you feel, and older than you want to look.
The experts here at Hedox Clinic however, can offer quick and cost effective treatments that have an excellent safety profile to help rejuvenate and smooth the lines on your face. Botox injections can be used as a preventative method of anti-ageing, as regular treatments can prevent the signs of premature ageing and keep your skin plump, smooth, and crease-free.
If you’re new to Botox treatment, the following questions will help you to decide whether Botox is right for you.
What is Botox?
Botox is used for three main purposes; muscle spasm control, severe underarm sweating and Botox Cosmetic improvements for the horizontal frown lines on the brow, the vertical 11s lines between the eyebrows, and crow’s feet around the eyes. We offer all three of these treatments here at Hedox Clinic, but we most frequently focus on using Botox for cosmetic purposes such as treating facial lines and wrinkles, using a Botox cosmetic injectable which contains the active ingredient botulinum toxin type A;, dissolved in bacteriostatic 0.9% sodium chloride.
It is important not to confuse Botox with injectable fillers. Dermal fillers work completely differently, adding volume and plumping up tissues so that lines and wrinkles diminish or disappear (Teoxane, Restylane, and Juvederm are examples of fillers that we use).
Is Botox Safe?
Believe it or not, but Botox is one of the most popular cosmetic treatments for reducing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles and is one of the most researched medicines in the world.
In medicine, Botox has been used for over 50 years. However it did not become a popular cosmetic treatment until the 1980’s when ophthalmologists noticed that wrinkles and fine lines disappeared when they treated patients with strabismus. Botox has been used as an effective wrinkle treatment for over 20 years.
How Long Does Botox Last?
It is important to know that Botox isn’t an instant procedure and it usually takes patients around 4-14 days and almost 28 days for a very small percentage of people. Although Botox injections do not have a permanent effect, you will see the positive and enhancing effects from Botox for 3 to 6 months, sometimes longer. You will notice the lines and wrinkles begin to slowly reappear as the muscle action and movement gradually returns over time, at which point we recommend a review or re-treatment.
Are There Any Side Effects to Botox?
As with all medicines and procedures, side effects can occur, however the side effects of Botox are rare. Some people may experience mild pain discomfort and/ or tenderness where the treatment was injected. Slight mild swelling may also occur; however, this usually goes within two days.
Other rare side effects include slight bruising and temporary drooping of the eyebrows or eyelids. This is why the treatments must be carried out by experienced and medically qualified experts in facial aesthetics, such as our Aesthetic Doctors here at Hedox Clinic.
In addition to this there are also other potential positive side effects, such as a reduction in headaches in some cases.
