Jowls
Say Goodbye to Jowls: Discover Effective Rejuvenating Treatments for a Youthful Profile
What are Jowls?
Jowls describe the sagging skin that appears to hang from the chin or jawline as we age. Minor jowls are common with age as the skin becomes less elastic. Though there are several factors that may influence the likelihood of developing jowls, the big one is the ageing process. As we age, the body produces less collagen and elastin – natural proteins that encourage skin elasticity and plumpness/firmness – and this leads to the skin losing its shape. Skin also becomes dry with age and thinner, also due to changes in natural protein production, and this means it is less resilient and can sag under gravity. Various other factors contribute to the development of jowls, including smoking and alcohol use, changes in skin hygiene (including excessive skin cleansing), trauma and rapid weight loss.
Jowls can be unsightly and lead to anxiety or feeling uncomfortable in one’s own skin. While there are exercises that can help strengthen and tighten the muscles that this skin covers, there are also non-surgical alternatives to strengthen the jawline and banish the look of jowls in one fell swoop. One way to banish jowls is by using dermal fillers.
Dermal fillers are injected into the skin to fill in areas of lost volume, usually in the cheeks. Here, fillers lift the cheeks, and this causes a natural lift to the skin around the jaw and mouth. Alternatively, fillers can be injected directly into the jowl area to produce a fuller and tighter appearance, reducing the appearance of loose skin.
