What is Profhilo? (anti-wrinkle and remodelling)

Originating in Italy, Profhilo® is now fully established across medical aesthetic clinics in the UK and internationally since 2015. Hyaluronic acid as a molecule is produced naturally by the human body to aid in cellular water retention, the volume of which decreases with age. Elastin and collagen are proteins which complement and oppose each other in the skin with elastin providing flexibility and ‘bounce’ while collagen provides strength and rigidity to the skin. Profhilo® is a clear injectable hyaluronic acid gel with one of the highest concentrations available and is often described as a skin booster. This novel product operates within the skin’s matrix with a prolonged impact, hydrating dermal cells and providing a lift to the surface of the skin. Skin tone and texture are improved and firmness of the skin is restored with a reduction in the tell-tale signs of ageing by improving the appearance of fine lines while rejuvenating the skin with a plump and youthful glow.

What does Profhilo® treat?

With one of the highest concentrations of hyaluronic acid available on the market, Profhilo® is the leading product in skin remodelling and addressing gravity weighted skin. From an aesthetics point of view, our main areas of consideration will focus on the face and neck, however Profhilo® is suitable for the treatment of skin laxity in other areas of the body including the abdomen, décolletage, arms, knees and hands. This treatment is not gender specific and is suitable for clients of all ages.

How many injections does it involve?

Injections of high concentration hyaluronic acid Profhilo® will depend on the area being treated and will be discussed with your practitioner during consultation. For the face, only five injections are required at standard points as per the protocol. For other areas such as the abdomen, décolletage, arms, knees and hands around 10 injection points are used per area but this is flexible depending on the individual.

How many appointments do I need?

Profhilo® hyaluronic acid injections are usually administered over two sittings, ideally four weeks (one month) apart and only take around 10-15 minutes to administer. As a stabilised product, Profhilo® is retained within the skin and enables the gradual hydration of the skin cells, stimulating collagen and elastin protein production, both of which naturally break down over time with the natural ageing process.

What are the benefits and risks of Profhilo® ?

As with any aesthetic treatment, it is worthwhile to be aware of any benefits and potential risks associated with high concentration gel hyaluronic acid injections Profhilo®

The benefits:

What’s the downtime / recovery time after Profhilo® injections?

There is extremely little downtime with Profhilo® treatment. It is possible to experience an instant hydration but the real results will develop over the course of the first month and beyond, boosting your own protein production of collagen and elastin to result in the plumping of the skin. Please do take note of what should be avoided post-treatment (see question 8).

Do I need to avoid anything after Profhilo® injections? (touching face, exercise etc)

As with all injectable treatments, the following advice is recommended:

Avoid wearing cosmetics for a minimum of 12 hours
Avoid further aesthetics procedures
Avoid alcohol or aspirin for 24 hours
Do not lie down immediately or for several hours
Please do not exercise vigorously for 24 hours
Extremes of temperature should be avoided e.g. saunas and steam baths and no sunbathing for one week

Profhilo® Vs. Dermal Fillers Vs. Botox – which is best?

Profhilo® is not dermal filler and therefore is not designed to add volume or alter facial features. The concept of Profhilo® is to reverse the signs of ageing, providing hydration from inside out at the cellular level while simultaneously stimulating the production of collagen. Profhilo® is perfect for clients that do not want the changes to the shape of the face that you can see with dermal fillers. The treatment will not

address blemishes, melasma or hyperpigmentation, but these issues can be further discussed with your doctor who may recommend appropriate medical grade skincare for you.

To get the best out of your aesthetics treatment, botulinum toxin can be used to treat the upper third of the face, while Profhilo® targets the lower two thirds to smooth lines and wrinkles for a very natural youthful rejuvenation. Dermal fillers may also be used in conjunction with Profhilo® to treat deep creases and volume loss. If you are looking for an effective rejuvenation of your face without changing the way you look this could be a great option for you and no one would be able to tell that you have had any work done!

Anything I need to do before my Profhilo® treatment?

Before your appointment with your doctor, it is best to avoid the use of aspirin and other NSAIDS (non-steroidal anti-inflammatories e.g. ibuprofen) unless these are taken as prescribed for a chronic health condition. Please discuss with your practitioner. By avoiding these drugs your chance of bruising at the injection site is reduced significantly, this will aid in returning to normal activities swiftly. Please ensure to read any client information provided to you in advance.

How long do the effects of Profhilo® treatment last?

Profhilo® injectable gel treatment can last for more than 6 months. Genetics, skin type and general skin condition are all factors that contribute to the longevity of the treatment.

How old do you have to be to have Profhilo® ?

There is no minimum age but recommendations state from the age of 30 is advisable, mainly associated with the ageing processes of loosening and laxity of the skin and breakdown of elastin and collagen in the skin’s matrix. Below this age the results may be too subtle in some cases.
