Is it time to switch up your skincare for the summer? Tips for the perfect summer skincare routine.

 

There are some products that are staple products in our routine all year round. Then there are others that we switch up as the weather turns warmer (hopefully!) and some that we can lose for a few months to lighten the daily routine. Below, Dr Humble gives his advice on the best summer skincare routine:

 

Protect, Protect, Protect – SPF

Although it comes last in the summer skincare routine, it’s the most important, so we’ll discuss it first.  SPF is singlehandedly, the most vital bit of kit in your bag! No summer skincare routine should skip SPF (or winter for that matter!). I recommend using at least SPF 30, but ideally a SPF 50 and make sure it’s broad spectrum to protect you from both UVA (the ageing rays) and UVB (the burning rays) rays. It can be mineral or chemical, whichever you prefer. The best SPF is the one that you like enough to apply every day! It should also be reapplied every 3 hours if you’re out in the sun and after swimming or sweating.  The most common SPF mistake is not applying enough, you should apply two full finger lengths. Clean off the day – CLEANSER

Removing oil and dirt that might build on your skin is important all year round, but in the summer, when your skin sweats more and products build up, cleansing becomes even more important. I recommend daily cleansing with a cleanser that has purifying and hydrating ingredients to cleanse and take off the day, without stripping the skin.

Prevent congestion – EXFOLIATE

It’s still important to exfoliate in the summer to prevent pore blockages and build up. Salicylic acid is good for helping to break down sebum and AHA’s can help the skin’s cell regeneration. Try Obagi Nu-Derm Exfoderm or NEOSTRRATA ResurfaceFoaming Glycolic Wash

Feed your skin – ANTIOXIDANTS

A really great addition to a summer skincare routine is an antioxidant serum. This helps protect the skin from oxidative stress, photodamage and helps reduce pigmentation. In fact, I would recommend you use one all year round. At the Hedox clinic we love SkinCeuticals CE Ferulic, Silymarin and Obagi Vitamin C which is available in 10, 15 or 20%

Keep it light – HYDRATE

You may not require so much moisturiser in the summer if you are applying a good SPF regularly, unless you have particularly dry skin. You could use a light-weight hydrator such as SkinCeuticals B5 or a hyaluronic acid such as SkinCeuticals HA Intensifier.

  • SPF – Broad spectrum, high factor, plenty of it, applied regularly, every single day!
